Everyone knows that babies sometimes cry excessively even if they aren’t in pain, hungry, or ill, but as of yet scientists don’t know why babies cry uncontrollably. At least, they don’t have a definitive answer. While that research continues, however, parents are left to deal with their fussy infants, not knowing how to console them.
Infant colic often results in sleepless nights, tension between spouses, and other problems, but there may be a way to help babies with colic through chiropractic care.
One interesting study found that chiropractic manual therapy improved babies’ crying behavior. The researchers split 104 infants into three randomized groups:
- Babies who received chiropractic care and whose parents knew they were receiving that care
- Babies who received chiropractic care, but their parents did not know whether they received care or whether they were the control group
- The control group; babies who did not receive chiropractic care, but their parents did not know whether they received care or whether they were the control group
Results of this study showed that infants who received chiropractic care cried less than those who did not. Babies were also five times less likely to cry if they received chiropractic care than if they did not. Additionally, parent awareness of whether the child received care or not had no effect, suggesting chiropractic therapy indeed made a difference and the improvement was not due to parent bias or placebo.
