Spinal stenosis can occur anywhere along the back that the protective spinal canal has narrowed for one reason or another and is causing neurologic deficits and pain. In the case of cervical spine stenosis, the location is in the neck. There are many different symptoms of cervical spine stenosis and you can experience more than one depending on the severity of your condition. Here are a few of the things you might notice if you have this condition, but you don’t have to just accept these as the normal outcome of getting older.
- Neck Pain, Discomfort, Stiffness or Reduced Range of Motion– If you notice any of these either all the time or when you move your neck a certain way, it is possible that you have cervical spine stenosis.
- Difficulty Walking– It might seem odd that a problem with your neck can affect your legs, but it isn’t unusual to experience balance issues or feel like your legs are not cooperating like they should. If you find yourself reaching for handrails or a cane more than you used to because your legs feel weak or numb, call us to be checked for cervical spine stenosis or another potential cause that can be treated.
- Difficulty Using Hands- Cervical spine stenosis can interfere with fine motor skills necessary for everything from writing to buttoning your shirt in the morning. Weakness or numbness in your hands or struggling to grip things are also possible. If you struggle with things that used to be far easier, call us for an evaluation.
- Shooting Pain– When a nerve is being pinched, it can create an intense amount of pain. In the case of cervical spine stenosis, that pain can radiate down your arms or your legs.
