Common Signs of Concussions

Concussions can happen in an endless list of situations. Though we often hear of them occurring in athletic events, such as soccer, football, and gymnastics, many times concussions occur from any direct trauma to the head such as falling, being hit by something, or a car accident. According to the American Association of Neurological Surgeons,  a concussion is defined as a clinical syndrome characterized by immediate and transient alteration in brain function, including alteration of mental status or level of consciousness, that results from mechanical force or trauma.

When we think of a concussion, you may picture a cartoon character who’s just been hit by an anvil, with stars around their head experiencing dizziness and possibly amnesia, but many of the signs or symptoms of concussions can be less obvious. If you’ve had a head trauma, you may have a concussion if you’re experiencing symptoms such as:

  • Headache
  • Vision disturbance (double or blurry vision)
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Tinnitus (ringing in ears)
  • Difficulty concentrating
  • Confusion
  • Sensitivity to light
  • Loss of taste or smell
  • Insomnia

Concussions are nothing to take lightly. They are especially serious if you have had more than one. If you aren’t sure whether or not you’ve had a concussion, the best thing you can do is to seek professional attention.
